In 2016, I landed my first contract job as an English teacher in South Korea. I can still remember the intense excitement and anticipation I felt at the time. It was a dream come true, and I was super stoked to start teaching and educating young minds in another country.
However, little did I know that my experience in Korea would turn out to be one of the defining moments of my entire career. My name is Jalen, but most of my Korean students had trouble pronouncing it correctly. It was understandable, given the differences in language. As a result, they came up with their own version of my name, “Jelly Teacher.” Before long, the nickname had caught on, and soon all my students and co-teachers were calling me “Jelly Teacher.”
What was really cool about the nickname was that it gave me a theme to follow with my students. One of the best rewards my classes used to love was the gummi candies I would give them. In Korea, kids call them “jelly candy” instead of gummies, so soon, my nickname gained a definite purpose: the teacher who always gave out jelly candies. It was a fun and memorable way to connect with my students and help them learn English, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.
So, now that you’re familiar with what a Jelly Teacher is, that’s me! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. This blog is where I aim to share my knowledge and skills to teach anyone willing to listen (well, read, in this case). I hope you’re ready for some awesome learning! Let’s get started!
